Congressman Jerry P. Treñas
“The youth is the hope of our future.” These words were uttered by our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, as he and his fellow patriots fought for the future of our nation. They sacrificed their lives to bring a better future for the youth of the nation. But what is often overlooked is the fact that our national heroes were young leaders during the age of revolution. Young leaders like the members of Iloilo City’s SK Federation.
Andres Bonifacio was merely 27 years old when he and his brethren founded the Katipunan. He died at the age of 33. Jose Rizal was already an accomplished scholar in his teens. He had finished his treasured Noli Me Tangre at the young age of 26. Our national hero died at the age of 35. Both Rizal and Bonifacio, our country’s greatest heroes, achieved so much despite of their short lives because they started young. They were leaders even before they were grown men.
I therefore encourage the members of the SK Federation of Iloilo City to continue your active participation in civic affairs and governance. Do not let your tender age be a hindrance to what you can accomplish. Your young age is an asset, as it keeps you idealistic and inspired to lead our people towards a brighter tomorrow. The Sangguniang Kabataan is the perfect avenue for our youth to contribute and participate in public affairs. The SK is the training ground for future leaders, as it gives ample experience to the Sanggunian members in local governance and public service.
The future of Iloilo City, and of our entire nation, is in your capable hands. Let the next generation of Filipino leaders come from your ranks, and may you never lose your way as you perpetuate the legacy of good governance and sincere public service.
