Approval of Treñas Bill increasing manpower of West Visayas State University Medical Center Recommended by House Committee on Appropriations

Quezon City – The House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, chaired by incoming Department of Transportation and Communications Secretary Joseph Emilio A. Abaya, has submitted a Committee Report recommending approval of a Bill seeking to increase the manpower of the West Visayas State University Medical Center. Iloilo City Representative Jerry P. Treñas filed House Bill 4989, which shall increase the number of plantilla positions for the West Visayas State University assigned to staff the West Visayas State University Medical Center in order to meet the standard staffing requirement for a 300-bed hospital.

The standard staffing requirement for a 300-bed hospital such as the West Visayas State University Medical Center is 752 employees. Unfortunately, the hospital is currently limited to only 235 regular employees. With the positive recommendation of the Committee on Appropriations, the Treñas Bill will soon be scheduled for plenary deliberation and approval at the House floor. The Iloilo City Solon believes that government hospitals like the West Visayas State University Medical Center should be properly manned in order to meet the high demand for medical services from public hospitals.  Treñas maintains that the national government should provide ample support for the country’s undermanned government hospitals, as the indigent citizens of the country rely heavily on the medical services provided by state medical centers.
