Congressman Jerry Treñas was chosen to represent the Philippines in the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) – Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) summit on trade which was held on June 4-8, 2012 in Brussels, Belgium. The ALDE-CALD meeting examined the trade relations between Europe and Asia. It also allowed the participants, members of parliament and other government officials from Europe and Asia, to strengthen the ties among liberals and democrats from various Asian and European countries.
The gathering of key leaders was held to allow the representatives from various countries to discuss the challenges and opportunities for liberals and democrats in the two continents. The summit was organized in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, the German foundation for liberal politics. Treñas discussed the issues affecting multilateral trade agreements, such as the impasse on the Doha Round of negotiations in the World Trade Organization and the possibility of increasing economic cooperation and integration within the ASEAN region, in recognition of the success experienced by the European Union.
Treñas is the Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Trade and Industry of the House of Representatives, and is a member of the Liberal Party.
