The Outstanding Women of Iloilo City 2012

Message for the Awarding Ceremony

By Congressman Jerry P. Treñas

US President Barack Obama was quoted as saying that “the best judge of whether or not a country is going to develop is how it treats its women. If it’s educating its girls, if women have equal rights, that country is going to move forward.” I firmly believe that our nation has the responsibility of not only granting equal rights to women, but also to empower them. Thankfully, we live in a country which cherishes women. Our very Constitution provides, under Article II Section 14, that the State recognizes the role of women in nation-building, and shall ensure the fundamental equality before the law of women and men.

If I am to be bold and predict the course of our country, keeping in mind what Barack Obama said, then I am confident that this country will develop to become one of the most progressive states in the world. This is true because we treat our women with dignity and respect. More so, this is true because women themselves are steering our ship towards a bright future. The Philippines has produced two women heads of states and countless of female heroes, artists, leaders and professionals. In all fields and all aspects of our society, women have distinguished themselves in outstanding fashion.

It was Margaret Thatcher, the Iron Lady of Great Britain, who once said that “if you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.” She is, of course, correct in her observation. In Iloilo City, our women leaders have proven that they do not just talk the talk. Rather, they are have produced exceptional results in the academe, the public and private sectors, business, law, medicine, law-enforcement, and many other fields. The Outstanding Women of Iloilo City (TOWIL) organization has identified these admirable women leaders. We are here today to give honor to their immeasurable contributions to the City of Iloilo.

The people of Iloilo are extremely proud of the achievements of our successful women leaders. The TOWIL awardees exemplify the passion, intelligence and sophistication of an Ilongga woman. Let us therefore warmly congratulate today’s awardees and continue our efforts to promote women empowerment.
