Manila – The Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) is set to implement tourism projects for the improvement Jaro Plaza Complex, including the restoration of the Old Jaro Municipal Building and the repair and rehabilitation of the Jaro Belfry. The Jaro Plaza Complex was declared as part of the country’s cultural heritage zone through the approval of Republic Act No. 10555, the Iloilo City Tourism and Heritage Law authored by Iloilo City Representative Jerry Treñas.
RA 10555 mandates the Department of Tourism and TIEZA to accord priority development to the Jaro Plaza Complex. Senate President Franklin Drilon and Congressman Treñas are coordinating with TIEZA in order to properly implement the restoration and enhancement of the Jaro Plaza Complex, including the Old Jaro Municipal Building and the Jaro Belfry. TIEZA representatives have already conducted a technical and ocular inspection of the sites in Jaro.
“It is absolutely necessary to preserve our heritage sites. These historical buildings are not just archaic structures, for these buildings embody the legacy, religious devotion and rich culture of the people of Iloilo City,” said Treñas. The Iloilo City Tourism and Heritage Law also declares the Molo Plaza Complex, Plaza Libertad Complex, Jaro Cathedral, Molo Church, Iloilo City Central Business District and Fort San Pedro as part of the country’s cultural heritage zone.
