17th Annual General Assembly Message
By Congressman Jerry P. Treñas
It is the declared policy of our government to support the creation and growth of cooperatives as practical tools for promoting self-reliance and harnessing people power towards the attainment of economic development and social justice. The 2008 Cooperative Code of the Philippines provides that the State shall encourage the private sector to undertake the actual formation and organization of cooperatives and shall create an atmosphere that is conducive to the growth and development of these cooperatives.
I am therefore pleased with the strong development of cooperatives in Iloilo City, as highlighted by the achievements of the Urban People’s Development Cooperative. Your cooperative has truly made its mark as a one of the leading organizations concerned in urban development in our Congressional District. The outstanding actions of your cooperative have allowed your members to work in unison in order to uplift their lives, greatly contributing to the development of our city.
It is also important to note that the United Nations General Assembly has declared 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives, highlighting the contribution of cooperatives to socio-economic development, particularly their impact on poverty reduction, employment generation and social integration. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that “cooperatives are a reminder to the international community that it is possible to pursue both economic viability and social responsibility.” The success of the Urban People’s Development Cooperative is the perfect example of an organization promoting both social responsibility and economic progress.
I highly encourage the members of the Urban People’s Development Cooperative to continue their active and meaningful participation in your organization’s numerous development programs. By pooling your resources and efforts together, your cooperative could reach great heights which cannot be done through individual and uncoordinated efforts. Thank you very much and may you all have a fruitful general assembly.
